Man Choked Woman Who He Said Owed Him Money

UTICA, NY – On September 2, at around 6:15 p.m., Utica Police responded to an assault complaint on the 1200 block of Court St, where a woman reported being attacked over a purported debt by a male acquaintance.

Upon arriving, officers were told by the victim that the male had repeatedly struck her face and choked her to unconsciousness twice. After the victim regained consciousness several hours later, roommates observed her condition and called the police.

Officers arrived to find a large group attempting to confront the male suspect outside the residence. Law enforcement intervened and detained the man without further incident.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries, while the suspect was taken to the Utica Police Department.

Henry McGriff, 38, of Utica, faces charges of assault in the third degree, strangulation in the second degree, and an outstanding warrant for petit larceny. The case was assisted by an investigator from the Criminal Investigations Division.
