Four D.C. High School Students Hospitalized After Sewer Gas Leak

by Jeff Jones

WASHINGTON, DC – A hazardous gas leak led to the hospitalization of four students at McKinley Tech High School.

On Monday, the students reported feeling unwell after detecting a mysterious odor and were promptly transported to a local hospital, where they are stable.

Investigations identified the odor as hydrogen sulfide, commonly known as sewer gas. This gas has flammable and toxic characteristics and is known to collect in low and enclosed spaces due to its density compared to air.

Health complications from inhaling the gas vary from headaches and eye irritation to severe outcomes like unconsciousness or death.

Crews from DC Fire and EMS are currently mitigating the situation at the affected school.
