PATERSON, NJ – A fatal accident involving a motorized scooter and a civilian vehicle is under investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. The accident occurred on Wednesday, September 20, at approximately 7:19 p.m. in the area of McBride and Murray Avenues in Paterson.

According to preliminary findings, Totowa police officers were following the scooter, which had a driver and a single passenger, from Totowa into Paterson. The scooter collided with a civilian vehicle, ejecting both men from the scooter.

They were transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where the driver was later pronounced deceased at approximately 2:06 a.m. on Thursday.

The other individuals involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

A 2019 law mandates that the Attorney General’s Office investigate any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement acting in an official capacity. The investigation must be presented to a grand jury to determine if an indictment against the involved officers is warranted.

The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time.
