ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Darron Smith, 23, of Shiprock and a member of the Navajo Nation, appeared in federal court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon against a minor and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Smith will remain in custody until a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

Court records indicate Smith assaulted an individual under the age of 18, identified as John Doe, using a knife, resulting in serious bodily injury.

An indictment is a formal accusation and does not establish guilt. Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment and up to 5 years of supervised release.
