Millburn, NJ — Police are conducting an investigation into the puzzling death of an 82-year-old man who was found on a Millburn sidewalk with severe burn wounds.

The man, identified as Shigeru Takeuchi, 82, of Union, was discovered unresponsive on the sidewalk. “He was pronounced dead at the scene about 30 minutes after police discovered him,” the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Millburn police responded to a report of an injured man at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday. The report led them to the 100 block of East Willow Street, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which released a statement on Saturday.

An autopsy to determine the cause of Takeuchi’s death is still pending. However, the initial investigations revealed that Takeuchi was found with severe burns, as disclosed by a source close to the investigation.
