TRENTON, NJ — Senate President Nick Scutari and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin released a joint statement regarding the ongoing legal challenge by the National Rifle Association (NRA) against New Jersey’s gun safety laws. The case is set to go before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

The lawmakers stressed the importance of ensuring safety in various public settings, citing the state’s existing gun laws as a measure of that commitment.

“Parents have the right to know that when they drop their children off at daycare or a high school soccer game, they aren’t going to be victims of gun violence,” they said in the statement.

The legislators affirmed that their efforts have contributed to making New Jersey the safest state in the country in terms of gun violence. “We are proud of our common-sense approach. It’s an honor to stand up for the people of New Jersey,” they added.

Both Scutari and Coughlin expressed confidence that the courts will find their laws to be consistent with historical practices and constitutional mandates.

New Jersey Democrats aligned with Governor Phil Murphy support further gun laws aimed at restricting the legal ownership of guns in New Jersey. New Jersey already has among the strictest gun laws in America.

They vowed to continue their work regardless of the lawsuit’s outcome, stating, “We will never stop fighting to keep our communities safe from gun violence.”
