MINEOLA, N.Y. – Kevin Barnett, a 70-year-old resident of Point Lookout, was arrested on charges related to the alleged neglect and subsequent starvation of his adult dog, named ‘Jessica’.

Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly reported that Barnett presented the deceased animal, displaying visible signs of severe malnourishment, for cremation at the West Hempstead Animal Hospital on July 1.

“Jessica” had no veterinary records since 2017, and a court-ordered necropsy, conducted on August 11, revealed she died from starvation.

The dog’s body condition was rated 1 out of 9 on the Purina Body Condition Scoring Scale, indicating extreme malnourishment.

Barnett was arrested in Point Lookout on Wednesday. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and is due back in court on November 27.
