Fatal Hit-and-Run in Smyrna Leaves One Dead, Investigation Underway

SMYRNA, DE – A fatal hit-and-run collision early this morning on Wheatleys Pond Road in Smyrna left one man dead. Delaware State Police are actively investigating the incident that involved a green 2012 Ford F-150 and a black 2011 Lincoln Town Car.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:06 a.m., when the Ford was traveling eastbound and the Lincoln was traveling westbound on Wheatleys Pond Road. The impact took place in the eastbound lane, causing both vehicles to veer off in different directions. The Ford rolled onto its driver’s side and caught fire, while the Lincoln hit a utility pole before coming to a stop in roadside grass.

The 71-year-old male driver of the Lincoln, a resident of Henderson, Maryland, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family. The driver of the Ford fled the scene and remains unidentified.

The road was closed for around four hours for investigation and clearance. Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information regarding the driver of the Ford to come forward.
