PEQUANNOCK, NJ – Angel Caraballo-Maldona, 45, of Newark, has been sentenced to four years in New Jersey State Prison for a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on May 8, 2023, in Pequannock Township. The sentence, imposed on October 27 by Judge Ralph E. Amirata, includes an 85% parole ineligibility clause under the No Early Release Act. Caraballo-Maldona had pled guilty to second-degree Reckless Vehicular Homicide on August 29.

The incident happened at approximately 5:18 a.m. at the intersection of Route 23 North and Alexander Avenue. A 2020 Chevy Traverse was stopped at a red light when a garbage truck driven by Caraballo-Maldona rear-ended it.

The collision caused the Traverse to catch fire. Caraballo-Maldona pulled the unconscious driver out and a bystander but was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Surveillance video showed Caraballo-Maldona was using his cell phone during the collision. He was subsequently charged and convicted of second-degree Reckless Vehicular Homicide.
