Virginia Beach Officer Recognized for Heroic Effort During Mall Shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – On April 2, 2022, at MacArthur Mall in Norfolk, MPO Curry of the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) responded to a crisis while off-duty with his family. Upon hearing gunshots, Curry secured his fiancé and daughter along with other customers, before investigating the situation.

Curry then collaborated with a uniformed sheriff’s deputy from the mall to search for the shooter. They found a victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. Curry swiftly administered first aid, using his belt as a tourniquet. With the scene not yet secured, he assisted in evacuating the injured individual, who was subsequently transported to a hospital. That day witnessed three gunshot victims, one of whom passed away from their wounds.

For his swift and decisive action, VBPD awarded MPO Curry the Medal of Valor. The department recognized Curry for potentially saving numerous lives through his efforts.
