Newport News Man Arrested for August 4th Homicide

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Newport News Police Department (NNPD) has arrested John Quamaine Peden, a 30-year-old local man, in connection to a homicide that occurred on August 4.

At 2:17 p.m., NNPD officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Nelson Drive following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Kevin Hughes, 31, with a fatal gunshot wound.

After the investigation, NNPD detectives identified Peden as the suspect.

He was apprehended on Sunday, and is now facing charges including second-degree murder and various firearm-related offenses.

The department asked anyone with further information to come forward to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
