New Haven Teen Dies After Being Shot Multiple Times

NEW HAVEN, CT – On Sunday night, 19-year-old Jovani Ortiz died in a incident in New Haven.

The New Haven Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter notification and subsequent reports of a gunshot victim on Downes Street, between Columbus Avenue and Congress Avenue, at 8:21 p.m.

Ortiz, found with multiple gunshot wounds, received immediate medical attention from medics and the New Haven Fire Department.

He was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries on Monday. He was just a week shy of his 20th birthday.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification are actively investigating, having gathered ballistic evidence at the scene. Reports indicate a vehicle fled post-shooting.
