President Joe Biden recently discussed the issue of fentanyl and its impact on the United States, particularly in relation to China. In a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Biden addressed the challenge of fentanyl trafficking and its components from China to the U.S. and the broader Western Hemisphere.

Biden acknowledged that in 2019, China had significantly reduced direct shipments of fentanyl to the United States. However, he noted that the drug trade has evolved since then. Now, instead of finished fentanyl, components such as chemicals and pill presses are being shipped from China with limited control. These components are utilized by cartels to manufacture illegal substances, including fentanyl, which are then smuggled into the United States.

In response to this evolving challenge, President Biden indicated that the United States seeks to cooperate with China in targeting these fentanyl components. The aim of this collaboration is to curb the manufacturing and trafficking of fentanyl and its precursors, thereby addressing a significant public health and safety issue in the United States. This renewed counternarcotics cooperation marks a critical step in bilateral efforts to combat the complex and evolving nature of the international drug trade.
