QUEENS, NY – Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced today that 24-year-old Mark Gibbs was sentenced to 11 and a half years in prison for his involvement in a shootout that injured an off-duty correction officer in Jamaica, Queens, in July 2022. Gibbs’ co-defendant, Sevaughn Green, is pending sentencing.

Gibbs, from Parsons Blvd., pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Justice Gia Morris also imposed five years of post-release supervision. Green, 21, from Dewitt Avenue in Brooklyn, is set to be sentenced on December 11.

The incident occurred on July 3, 2022, at the intersection of 214th Place and Jamaica Avenue. Off-duty correction officer David Donegan witnessed an altercation and saw Green attempt to assault another individual. Green subsequently obtained a gun from Gibbs. When Donegan intervened, Gibbs retrieved another gun from his bag and opened fire, wounding Donegan in the calf. Donegan returned fire, hitting Gibbs and Green, who had also engaged in the shooting.

Donegan received treatment at a local hospital for his injury. No bystanders were harmed in the incident. DA Katz emphasized the unacceptability of such reckless gun violence and commended Officer Donegan’s courage and dedication to public safety.
