Bronx Man Receives 25 Years to Life for Fatal Shooting At Neighborhood Playground

BRONX, NY — Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced today that Jameel Campbell, 45, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the fatal shooting of Ezequiel Rivera, 27. The shooting occurred near a playground at the Monroe Houses on the morning of September 13, 2020.

Campbell, who last resided at 800 Soundview Avenue, was found guilty of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Bronx Supreme Court Justice Guy Mitchell imposed the sentence, with the prison terms for both charges to run concurrently, followed by five years of post-release supervision.

The investigation revealed that Campbell fired seven shots at Rivera, striking him twice and resulting in his death. After the shooting, Campbell fled to Atlantic City, NJ, where he was apprehended by authorities in February 2021. District Attorney Clark remarked on the callous nature of the crime and emphasized the jury’s verdict as a stand against such violence in the community.
