NYPD Officers Shoot Man Armed with Gun in Washington Heights

NEW YORK CITY, NY – A man is currently hospitalized and under arrest following a shooting incident with the New York Police Department in Washington Heights early Thursday morning.

Chief of Patrol, John Chell, reported that the man, involved in a car accident near the Henry Hudson Parkway, brandished a gun at the responding officers. The accident, which occurred at around 3 a.m. near 177th Street and Haven Avenue, led to the closure of the ramp to the George Washington Bridge.

Officers arrived to find a man and a woman in a stolen black car. The man, wearing a mask and armed with a gun, pointed the weapon at the officers. Richard Roger, a local resident, witnessed the event, recounting hearing multiple shots and observing the aftermath from his apartment.

The NYPD confirms that eight shots were fired, with at least two hitting the suspect in the chest. The man was subsequently taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. No officers were injured in this incident.

Chell highlighted the challenges faced by the police, mentioning a note found in the vehicle indicating the suspect’s intention of suicide and an apology to the officers.
