NEWPORT, N.C. – A standoff at the Hostess House motel in Newport concluded with the death of the gunman, identified as 59-year-old Troy Kellum, and the motel owner, 46-year-old Satyen Naik.

The Newport Police Department responded to initial reports of a trespasser at the motel, which escalated to a shooting.

Kellum, described as a squatter, had barricaded himself in a room following the shooting.

Despite prolonged negotiations, the standoff ended when Kellum took his own life as the tactical team entered. Naik succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The situation led to soft lockdowns at nearby educational institutions as a precaution. Kellum, homeless but originally from Carteret County, had been previously reported for trespassing at the motel.
