Toms River School Board Wants Voting Machines Out, Approves 2024-25 Calendar

TOMS RIVER, NJ – The Toms River Regional Board of Education has approved the 2024-25 school calendar, which includes virtual instruction days coinciding with election dates, despite mixed feelings among board members.

In a 6-3 vote on Wednesday evening, the Board decided to maintain virtual instruction on November 5, 2024, the date of the General Election, and June 3, 2025, the Primary Election date. This decision follows a precedent set on November 7, 2023, the 2023 General Election day, and anticipates another remote instruction day on June 4, 2024, for the 2024 Primary.

The Board continues to urge the Ocean County Board of Elections to relocate polling stations out of schools in Toms River. Currently, 11 of the 18 schools in the district serve as polling places. The surrounding areas of Beachwood, Pine Beach, and South Toms River do not use schools for this purpose. The Board’s request aims to eliminate the need for virtual instruction days during elections.
