Man Hid Dead Mom’s Corpse Inside Storage Unit, Found by Auction Winner

Self storage units for storing a multitude of various items.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Rogelio Bernal, 53, was taken into custody following the discovery of his mother’s remains in a storage unit in San Antonio, Texas. This chilling case came to light when a buyer at a storage unit auction reported finding human remains in a trash can.

Bernal, previously the renter of the unit, was arrested on an unrelated warrant on December 22. According to court records, he faced drug charges at the time of his arrest and had an active warrant.

Upon his arrest, Bernal reportedly confessed to the police that the remains were those of his mother. He claimed to have been her caregiver at their shared apartment, where she allegedly died years prior. KSAT, citing a probable cause affidavit, reports that around October 31, 2021, Bernal heard his mother fall in the bathroom while showering. Despite finding her still breathing after the fall, Bernal, concerned about his criminal record, chose not to alert the authorities.

The investigation into the circumstances of the mother’s death and the subsequent handling of her remains continues.
