Union County Man Detained on Firearms Charges Following Traffic Stop

ELIZABETH, NJ – Montrell Ayers, a 37-year-old resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey, was arrested on firearms charges during a traffic stop on December 28th. The incident occurred at the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Behnert Place in Union County.

Officer Travis Freeman initiated the stop on a black 2019 Toyota at approximately 7:58 PM for an equipment violation. Officer Ryan Drew arrived later to provide backup. During the investigation, Officer Freeman discovered a loaded .38 Hermann Weihrauch revolver with hollow nose ammunition in Ayers’ possession.

Ayers faces charges of 2nd Degree Possession of a Firearm and 4th Degree Possession of Hollow Nose Ammunition. He was booked into the Union County Jail pending a detention hearing. Additionally, Ayers received summonses for improper display of license plates and driving with a suspended license. The arrest was released by Capt. Matthew R. Nazzaro.
