Troopers Rescue Elderly Couple and Cats from Motor Home Fire on Thruway in Catskill

CATSKILL, NY – On December 28, 2023, New York State Troopers showcased exemplary bravery and quick action during a vehicle fire on the Thruway in Catskill. Trooper Langtry of SP Albany CVEU (Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit) and Trooper Westfall of SP Kingston responded to a distress call involving a motor home engulfed in flames.

The motor home’s position, perilously close to the guide rail, had blocked its door, trapping two elderly occupants inside. With no time to lose, the troopers used a baton to break the window of the door. They successfully extracted the couple and their two cats through the window, averting a potential tragedy.

The rescued individuals sustained minor injuries and suffered from smoke inhalation but were otherwise safe, thanks to the troopers’ swift and decisive action. This incident highlights the dangers posed by vehicle fires and the critical role of quick emergency response in ensuring public safety.
