Man Faces Charges in Fatal Brick Township Hit and Run

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — Mark Carey Jr., 19, from South Amboy, has been charged in a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred Saturday morning in Brick Township. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Brick Township Chief of Police David Forrester announced the charges, which include Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Death.

The accident, involving a pedestrian, took place around 9:15 a.m. near Route 35 South and Bay Avenue. Responding officers found a female pedestrian struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The victim later succumbed to her injuries at Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center.

An investigation led by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Brick Township Police, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, linked a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Carey to the crime. Carey, identified as the driver, was arrested at his home and is currently held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing. Additional charges include Reckless and Careless Driving, and Failure to Maintain Lane of Travel.
