A dramatic rescue unfolded in Riverhead, New York, where three bulls narrowly escaped a heist attempt and are now heading to a safe haven. The bulls, named Steve, Artie, and Robert, were initially discovered hidden on a property adjacent to an unlicensed slaughterhouse operated by Carlos Lauro, 76, who recently pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a German Shepherd.

These animals, found in poor conditions without food or water, were part of a larger group of nearly 100 animals, including piglets, goats, and poultry, rescued by Humane Long Island. This Saturday, an attempted abduction of the bulls was thwarted after a large hole was cut in the fence of an adjoining preserve. Fortunately, Humane Long Island intervened in time, securing the bulls back to Lauro’s property.

The bulls are scheduled to be moved to their permanent home at Tamerlaine Sanctuary & Preserve in Montague, NJ, a 336-acre vegan sanctuary dedicated to the care of rescued farm animals. John Di Leonardo, Executive Director of Humane Long Island, emphasized the bulls’ journey from imminent slaughter to a safe, nurturing environment. He also called for public awareness and a reconsideration of animal consumption in light of these events.

Tamerlaine Sanctuary & Preserve and Humane Long Island’s actions highlight the critical need to address animal welfare and the ongoing existence of illegal slaughterhouses and wet markets. Gabrielle Stubbert, Executive Director of Tamerlaine, stressed the importance of combating animal suffering and associated health risks in the New York City area.

Humane Long Island, recognized for its significant animal advocacy work, continues its mission to protect and rescue animals from inhumane conditions. Their efforts in this case reflect a broader commitment to animal welfare and public health.
