Newark, NJ – The City of Newark has announced the extension of its “Code Blue” alert from Monday, February 5, at 8 p.m. through Thursday, February 8, at 7 a.m., in response to the forecasted drop in temperatures. This emergency alert is activated when temperatures are expected to fall to 32°F or below, or when the wind chill factor reaches 0°, signaling extreme cold conditions that pose significant health risks.

Residents are urged to exercise caution during this period of intense cold weather, with overnight temperatures anticipated to reach a low of 27°F. The extended “Code Blue” is a precautionary measure to protect individuals from the dangers of such severe conditions, including hypothermia and frostbite.

In an effort to provide refuge from the cold, the City, through its partnerships with Social Service agencies, has ensured the availability of emergency shelters. These shelters are operational during the extreme cold weather period, offering a warm and safe environment for those in need.

For families seeking shelter, the Miller Street Pathways to Housing Center, located at 41 Miller Street in Newark, is available and can be contacted at (862) 229-4461. Adults without children can seek assistance at the H.E.L.P. Center, situated at 224 Sussex Avenue, Newark, with a contact number of (973) 705-7200.

The City also reminds residents in need of sheltering services to reach out to the Office of Homeless Services at (973) 877-9481, available Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for more information and assistance.
