Brooklyn Man Receives 9 ½-Year Sentence for Shooting That Injured NYPD Detective

Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Jah-Mike Woolridge, a 28-year-old resident of Brownsville, Brooklyn, has been sentenced to nine and a half years in prison following his guilty plea to first-degree attempted assault. This sentence comes in response to a June 2022 shooting incident in Brownsville, where Woolridge fired approximately nine rounds in daylight, striking a marked NYPD vehicle and causing injury to a detective through shattered glass.

The incident occurred on June 23, 2022, around 4:30 p.m., at the intersection of Legion Street and Pitkin Avenue, stemming from a prior dispute with a 23-year-old man. Woolridge targeted the man’s car, which was stopped at a traffic light, unleashing multiple shots that also endangered the surrounding area. Although the intended victim’s car was hit, he escaped without injury.

Detective Sunjay Verma, who happened to be patrolling the area, suffered arm injuries from broken glass when a bullet hit and shattered his vehicle’s driver’s side window.

Despite the attack, Detective Verma pursued Woolridge, who eventually fled into a nearby housing development. Authorities later recovered a loaded black semi-automatic pistol linked to the incident. Woolridge was apprehended in Maryland by a joint task force in November 2022 and extradited back to New York.

“Today’s sentencing reflects our commitment to holding individuals accountable for endangering our communities and our police officers,” stated DA Gonzalez.
