Woman Hospitalized After Accidental Shooting in Proctorville

Proctorville, OH – A Proctorville woman is in stable condition following an early morning shooting incident that occurred at a local apartment, as reported by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident took place around 6:40 a.m. on Thursday at an apartment located on Township Road 1280. According to the victim, 46-year-old Melissa Callicoat, she and her boyfriend, 37-year-old Jeffery Leffingwell, were handling a .38-caliber revolver in bed when it accidentally discharged, striking her in the lower abdomen.

Following the incident, Callicoat was quickly transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia, where she is currently listed in stable condition.

Jeffery Leffingwell was arrested in connection with the shooting.

Due to his status as a convicted felon, which prohibits him from possessing firearms, Leffingwell faces a third-degree felony charge of having weapons under disability. He is now being held in the Lawrence County Jail.

Sheriff Jeff Lawless has confirmed that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
