Child Abduction Thwarted at Delaware Acme

NEWARK, DE – The Newark Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit is actively investigating an attempted child abduction at the Acme grocery store on Grove Lane.

On February 17, around 3:45 PM, a man attempted to take off with a grocery cart containing an 8-year-old child.

The child, seated in the cart, was quickly pushed away by an unknown Black male, who was neither known to the child nor the accompanying family members. The swift intervention of the people with the child thwarted the attempt, leading to a confrontation after which the male released the cart and exited the store.

The Newark Police have identified the individual as a person of interest and urge anyone with information or recognition of the subject to contact Detective William Anderson. The department has provided additional avenues for submitting tips, including potential reward information, on their tips page.
