Garrett County Couple Faces Charges in Arson Case Involving Pets

GARRETT COUNTY, MD – Christopher J. Baker, 36, and April J. Fazenbaker, 41, of Friendsville, have been indicted on charges related to a June 1, 2023, house fire. The incident, which resulted in the death of two cats and endangered six puppies, has led to charges of first-degree arson and conspiracy to commit first-degree arson.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal, after a detailed investigation, identified two separate origins of the fire at 339 Cherry Lane Road. Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray expressed his dismay over the event, condemning the deliberate act that led to the loss of pet lives and endangered others.

The investigation, aided by the Garrett County State’s Attorney’s Office, culminated in the indictment of Baker and Fazenbaker. The couple surrendered to authorities and were later released on a $20,000 unsecured bond. Mowbray praised the investigative team for their efforts to uphold community values by holding the perpetrators accountable.
