Fatal Crash Kills One in Wilmington on I-495

WILMINGTON, DE – The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a deadly incident that occurred on Interstate 495. The accident, which happened in the early hours, resulted in the death of a Newark man.

The sequence of events began when a 1998 green Honda Accord, following a Bobtail tractor, collided with it on the Christina River Bridge’s descent. This collision left the green Honda straddling the right lane and shoulder. Subsequently, a black 2018 Honda Accord crashed into the stationary green Honda, leading to the ejection and subsequent death of its driver, a 26-year-old from Newark. The black Honda eventually caught fire after coming to a stop on the right shoulder, while the green Honda was displaced into the middle lane.

The green Honda’s driver, a 25-year-old from Wilmington, was unharmed, having previously exited his vehicle to speak with the tractor’s driver. Following the tragic event, the roadway remained closed for around four hours to facilitate an investigation and cleanup. The identity of the deceased is withheld pending notification of next of kin.
