Spike in Kia Vehicle Thefts Across Schenectady Prompts Police Warning

SCHENECTADY, NY — The Schenectady Police Department has issued an alert following a series of Kia vehicle thefts within the city. Between February 28 and March 31, 2024, six Kia vehicles were reported stolen, with thieves seemingly able to bypass the cars’ ignition systems. The thefts predominantly occurred between Tuesday and Thursday, during the late evening to early morning hours of 8:30 PM to 4:00 AM.

The Schenectady Police, in conjunction with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), are advising vehicle owners on preventative measures to protect against such thefts. This advisory comes as the NHTSA released detailed information regarding the uptick in Kia vehicle thefts and practical steps for owners to safeguard their vehicles.

The Detective Division of the Schenectady Police Department is actively investigating these incidents and encourages anyone with information to come forward. The public can contribute any tips or information by contacting the department’s TIPS Line at 518-788-6566.
