NYC Elevator Attacker Says Diabetes Made Him Do It, Avoids Lengthy Jail Time

Manhattan Man May Escape Jail for Assault Blaming Diabetes

MANHATTAN, NY — In a controversial case, a Manhattan man accused of assaulting a disabled individual may avoid jail time by attributing the attack to his diabetes. Andrew Caban is facing criticism for his claim that his medical condition led him to punch 61-year-old Richard Regen, resulting in severe injuries that necessitated brain surgery for Regen. Following the incident, Regen, who was already recovering from a stroke, spent a month in the hospital and now endures frequent seizures.

During his court appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court, Caban expressed remorse, citing a long history of diabetes and hypoglycemic episodes as factors that contributed to his actions.

He pleaded guilty to third-degree reckless assault, a plea that critics argue might result in a minimal punishment for the serious consequences of his actions.
