4.8 Earthquake Shakes New Jersey Tri-State Area

TOMS RIVER, NJ—Homeowners across Ocean County are reporting a ground-shaking event that began at around 10:23 a.m. on Friday. The rolling and rumbling went on for about five seconds before stopping.

The US Geological Survey has confirmed the quake event was a 4.8 magnitude quake centered in Lebanon, New Jersey.

The quake was felt from New York to Maryland, according to reports on social media.

Earthquakes are rare in New Jersey. Since 2023, New Jersey has had four quakes of magnitudes up to 3.8: 0 quakes above magnitude 3, and 3 quakes between magnitudes 2 and 3.
