ALLENTOWN, PA – The Allentown Police Department has announced that Jose Hilario Abreu faces multiple felony charges following the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy.

District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan disclosed that Abreu is charged with involuntary manslaughter of a victim under 12 years of age and two counts of endangering the welfare of children. These charges stem from a distressing incident involving a firearm that resulted in the death of Elijah Abreu Borgen.

Abreu was arraigned by District Judge Ron Manescu, with bail set at $250,000 cash, leading to his commitment to Lehigh County Jail. His arraignment is slated for April 12, at 1:30 PM.

The incident unfolded on March 28, when a 911 call reported a child accidentally shooting himself. Responders found Elijah with life-threatening injuries, and despite being rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation uncovered that Abreu had left a loaded handgun under a sofa, leading to the tragic accident. A Glock 19 semi-automatic handgun, found unattended and loaded, was identified as the source of the fatal shot.

This case highlights the critical importance of firearm safety, especially in homes with young children. The ongoing investigation involves multiple law enforcement and forensic departments, underscoring the severity of the situation.
