Marine Mammal Stranding Center Rescues Entangled Seal in Long Branch

LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Marine Mammal Stranding Center recently responded to an emergency call regarding an entangled seal in Long Branch.

The call, received on April 6, concerned a male Grey seal, marking the second such incident within a 24-hour period. Upon arrival at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, the seal underwent a thorough examination. It was discovered that the seal had been entangled in a loop of polypropylene line, similar to another case reported the previous afternoon. However, the loop was not tightly wound around the seal’s neck, preventing injury.

After the entanglement was carefully removed, the seal, weighing 55 pounds and in excellent condition, did not require further rehabilitative care. Showing signs of good health and aggressiveness, the seal was released back into the wild the same afternoon.

This event is the fourth instance of a seal entanglement handled by the MMSC this season.
