Prince George’s County Police Charge Suspect in Takoma Park Murder

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD—The Prince George’s County Police Department has successfully apprehended 22-year-old Wilmer Echenique-Navarro of Capitol Heights, charged with the murder of 40-year-old Derek Coleman. The homicide occurred in the unincorporated area of Takoma Park, with the victim found deceased from a gunshot wound in an apartment building stairwell on March 3, 2024.

Following thorough investigative efforts, Echenique-Navarro was identified and arrested by the department’s Fugitive Unit on April 15, 2024. He has since confessed to the shooting, although the motive behind the murder is still being explored by detectives.

Echenique-Navarro faces charges of first and second degree murder and is currently held by the Department of Corrections. The Prince George’s County Police urge anyone with additional information related to this case to contact their Homicide Unit at 301-516-2512.
