Cape May, NJ — On Monday at 12:46 p.m., Cape May firefighters responded to an incident at 11 Decatur Street where a trash truck backed into a building, striking a utility pole. The collision caused structural damage to a porch column, posing a risk of collapse for the second and third-floor decks.
Engine 51, Rescue 51, and Chief 51 were dispatched to the scene, followed by additional units from the USCG Training Facility Cape May, West Cape May Volunteer Fire Company, and other local fire and utility companies. Firefighters evacuated the building’s occupants and worked for over three hours to shore up the structure. Coverage for the island was provided by the Erma Volunteer Fire Company, Townbank Fire Company, and Wildwood Crest EMS during the incident.
No injuries were reported among residents or fire personnel.
