Scammers Posing as Basketball Charity Fundraiser Scamming Victims in Central Park

NEW YORK, NY—The NYPD is requesting the public’s help in identifying four suspects involved in a fraudulent scheme and attempted theft in Central Park.

The incident occurred near West 101st Street and West Drive on Tuesday, May 21, at approximately 1:30 PM.

A 23-year-old female victim reported being approached by four unknown males who solicited money for a supposed basketball fundraiser. A

fter the victim handed her phone to one of the individuals to make a donation, he attempted to transfer an undetermined amount of cash from her account to his via Zelle. The group then dispersed, fleeing the scene on foot in various directions.

Descriptions of the individuals are as follows:

  1. Male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, slim build, wearing black sweatpants, a light-colored shirt, black and purple Nike sneakers, and sporting long dreadlocks.
  2. Male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, last seen wearing a light gray shirt.
  3. Male, also around 5 feet 8 inches tall.
  4. Male, dressed in a white shirt and of a slim build.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported following the incident.
