NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Vincent Sabo of the New Brunswick Police Department announced the arrest of a local man following a hit and run early Monday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:24 A.M. on May 20, 2024, at 100 Jersey Avenue in New Brunswick. Authorities responded to the scene where they found a 25-year-old male pedestrian from New Brunswick who had sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and is currently in critical condition.

An investigation by Officer Mark Smith of the New Brunswick Police Department and Sergeant Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office led to the identification of 31-year-old Abel Bustos-Medel, also of New Brunswick, as the driver.

Bustos-Medel allegedly struck the victim and fled the scene. His sedan was later located on Livingston Avenue, showing damage consistent with a pedestrian crash.

Bustos-Medel was arrested without incident and has been charged with third-degree assault by auto, third-degree leaving the scene of a serious bodily injury accident, and driving under the influence.

The New Brunswick Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office are seeking additional information and surveillance footage related to the incident. They urge anyone with information to contact Officer Mark Smith at 732-745-5005 or Sergeant Jonathan Berman at 732-745-4328.
