Newark Police Capture Suspect in Stolen KIA After Fleeing

NEWARK, DE – Two individuals have been charged and a third is in custody following a vehicle theft and subsequent police chase in Newark. The incident, which occurred early in the morning on May 18, began when a Newark Police Officer noticed a Kia driving on the wrong side of Elkton Road.

The vehicle, later identified as stolen and not yet reported as such, fled from the police but was eventually stopped at a dead end. Several suspects exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. The driver, identified as 18-year-old David Ramirez-Chun from Cecilton, Maryland, was apprehended shortly after by Newark officers and officers from the University of Delaware Police Department.

Further investigations led to the discovery of another stolen vehicle, a Hyundai, parked on Elkton Road. It was determined that Ramirez-Chun, along with other suspects, arrived in Newark in the Hyundai, and subsequently stole the Kia. Arrest warrants have been issued for two of Ramirez-Chun’s accomplices, both teenagers from Maryland.

Ramirez-Chun faces multiple charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, disregarding a police officer’s signal, conspiracy, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and various traffic offenses. Following his appearance before Justice of the Peace Court #11 via video, Ramirez-Chun was held on $3,200 secured bail and is currently detained at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
