Woman Killed, Youn Child Airlifted After Crash on Route 17

GLOUCESTER COUNTY, VA — A tragic accident occurred on Route 17 when a 1997 Acura CL, driven by Amber L. Velez of Gloucester, veered off the highway into the median and overturned. The crash took place at 5:14 PM on Saturday.

The Acura then collided with a 2021 Ford EcoSport traveling in the opposite direction. Velez, 39, was ejected from her vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. A 7-year-old passenger in the Acura was airlifted to CHKD in Norfolk, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.
