Newark Warns of Excessive Heat Advisory Amid Rising Temperatures

Newark, NJ - File Phoot.

NEWARK, NJ — Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Department of Health and Community Wellness Director Ketlen Baptiste Alsbrook have declared an Excessive Heat Advisory for Newark. The advisory, effective from noon today, Tuesday, June 18, until 9:00 PM tomorrow, Wednesday, June 19, comes as the city braces for temperatures in the mid-90s.

This heat event marks the season’s first official heat wave in Newark, with temperatures forecasted to reach up to 94°F and a heat index peaking at 95°F. The consecutive days of high temperatures signal a significant rise in heat-related risks.

The Health Department is actively advising residents to take necessary precautions to mitigate health risks due to the heat. Recommendations include utilizing air conditioning, staying hydrated by drinking water consistently throughout the day, and avoiding intense physical activities during peak heat hours, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

These measures are particularly crucial for seniors and individuals with chronic health or mental health conditions.
