CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ – The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, led by Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Sheriff Robert Nolan, is warning the public about a rise in telephone scams across the county.

Prosecutor Sutherland highlighted that these scams often involve callers impersonating law enforcement officials from agencies such as the DEA or the County Sheriff’s Department. These callers falsely claim that the recipient has an outstanding arrest warrant or has missed a jury duty notice, demanding cash payments to avoid arrest. Such calls are fraudulent and are not connected to any legitimate law enforcement activities.

Residents are advised to report any such calls to their local police department immediately, providing the phone number from which the call was received. Meeting the caller or providing them with cash should be strictly avoided.

Furthermore, Prosecutor Sutherland reassured the public that legitimate law enforcement officials in Cape May County do not solicit payments over the phone for warrants or any other legal matters.
