What’s On Fire In Ocean County? I Smell Smoke

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Residents as far east as Toms River have noticed the smell of smoke in the air on Friday and Saturday, causing many to take to social media to find out what’s on fire.

Controlled Burn at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Causes Smoke in Ocean County

Residents of Ocean County may be noticing a smoky scent in the air today due to a controlled fire burn at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. The base has announced that this planned burn is occurring on the east side of the installation, specifically on the ranges, and is being managed by trained professionals.

The activity involves a large cloud of smoke, which is a normal and expected result of the burn process. This method is often used to manage vegetation and reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires. The base assures that the burn is being closely monitored and thanks the community for their understanding during this period.

Residents in and around the area are advised that the smoky conditions may persist while the controlled burn is in progress.

The burn is to limit fire exposure aboard the base during what is now the hottest and driest period of 2024. The area in and around the base is currently at a ‘high’ risk of forest fire, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
