Cumberland Police Arrest Man After Vehicle Chase and Crash

CUMBERLAND, MD—On Monday, June 24, Marley Zaire Powell, a 30-year-old resident of Cumberland, was arrested following a series of traffic violations and a subsequent vehicle crash. The Cumberland Police Department reported that the incident began on Maryland Ave when officers noticed Powell actively using a cellphone while driving a Volkswagen Jetta. The situation escalated as Powell’s vehicle crossed the center line, prompting police to attempt a traffic stop.

Powell accelerated the vehicle in response, leading to a chase that continued onto Virginia Ave and ended when he crashed into a residence on West First St. Powell fled the vehicle but was located and detained shortly afterward at a residence on Oak St. Further investigations revealed that the vehicle involved was stolen.

Powell was charged with multiple offenses, including Motor Vehicle/Unlawful Taking, Disorderly Conduct, Obstructing and Hindering, Failure to Obey, Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, Driving without a License, Fleeing and Eluding, and numerous related traffic and Hit & Run offenses. He was taken before the District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance and subsequently remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center with a bond set at $5,000.
