Illinois Convicted Sex Offender Caught Luring Child in New York

DUTCHES COUNTY, NY – Derek Hasselbrink, also known as “Derek Spear,” a 48-year-old convicted sex offender from Quincy, Illinois, was arrested this on charges of enticing a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity. He was presented in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen L. McNaught.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams stated that Hasselbrink allegedly posed as a 17-year-old boy online to coerce a 15-year-old girl into sexual activities. Aware of the girl’s age, he deceitfully concealed his true identity and intentions. Williams emphasized the commitment of his office to pursuing those who exploit children sexually.

FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Smith condemned Hasselbrink’s actions, highlighting the severity of preying on children’s innocence. He credited the arrest to the FBI’s dedication to protecting vulnerable populations from exploitation.

The complaint alleges that from April 2023 to July 2, 2023, Hasselbrink engaged in sexually explicit communications with the minor and traveled to meet her in Dutchess County, New York, intending to commit sexual acts.
