Former Pennsylvania High School Band Director Convicted of Sexual Assault

HARRISBURG, PA — Attorney General Michelle Henry has confirmed the conviction of Theron Roberts, a former band director at Crestwood High School in Luzerne County, on charges of sexual assault. The jury delivered a guilty verdict late Thursday, convicting Roberts of felony institutional sexual assault, corruption of minors, and two misdemeanor counts of indecent assault.

Roberts, 41, is scheduled for sentencing on September 27. The case centers on allegations that he groped a student in 2019, exploiting his authority and the trust he had cultivated with the student over several years. The incidents reportedly escalated from inappropriate comments and touching during band lessons to a more severe assault in a secluded school area.

The Attorney General praised the jury’s diligence and the bravery of the victim in confronting their abuser in court, highlighting the significance of their testimony in achieving the verdict. The conviction marks a pivotal moment in addressing abuse of power in educational settings.
