Goshen Man Sentenced to 18 Years to Life for Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child

GOSHEN, NY—Craig Merlock, 45, of Goshen, was sentenced on Wednesday to 18 years to life in prison after previously pleading guilty to predatory sexual assault against a child. The sentencing occurred in Orange County Court, where the prosecution had recommended a maximum of 25 years to life.

Merlock, who will also be registered as a sex offender under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA), admitted during his plea proceedings to engaging in oral sexual conduct with a child under thirteen on July 24, 2023.

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler acknowledged the efforts of the New York State Police and their Computer Crimes Unit, along with the Orange County Child Abuse Investigation Unit, for their roles in the investigation that led to Merlock’s arrest and conviction.

DA Hoovler highlighted the significance of the sentence, stating that while the punishment cannot undo the harm caused, it serves to protect the community by removing a dangerous individual. He reiterated the commitment of his office and law enforcement partners to relentlessly pursue sexual predators and support victims of sexual assault. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Michael Purcell.
