Bicyclist Targets Driver With Punch to the Face

UTICA, NY — The Utica Police Department has arrested Matthew Rizzo in connection with an assault and criminal mischief incident that occurred on August 13, 2024. The incident took place at approximately 11:45 a.m. on the 900 block of Eagle Street.

According to the victim, while stopped at a traffic light, Rizzo, whom the victim knew, approached the vehicle on a bicycle and punched the victim in the face through the open driver’s side window. Rizzo then damaged the vehicle’s driver side mirror before fleeing the scene.

The case, due to the extent of the damage, was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division. On August 23, members of the Patrol Division located Rizzo. When officers attempted to take him into custody, Rizzo attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended without further incident.

Matthew Rizzo has been charged with:

  • Harassment in the Second Degree
  • Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree

Rizzo was transported to the Utica Police Department, where he is being held pending further legal proceedings.
