FREEHOLD, N.J. — An Asbury Park man has been charged with attempted murder after a stabbing incident on Labor Day, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday.

Police responded to a call on the 500 block of Asbury Avenue on Monday and found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. Bystanders were aiding the victim when officers arrived, according to the authorities.

Travis A. Cavanaugh, 39, was arrested at the scene. He faces charges of first-degree attempted murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Investigators said Cavanaugh approached the woman from behind and began stabbing her until a witness intervened. The victim was taken to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.
