New Jersey Teen Arrested After Placing Hidden Camera in Mall Bathroom

Jersey City, NJ – An 18-year-old male has been arrested following the discovery of a recording device hidden in a public bathroom at Newport Mall. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit announced the arrest after an investigation into the incident.

Andy Cardenas, a Jersey City resident, was taken into custody for one count of Invasion of Privacy, violating N.J.S.A. 2C:14-9b(1), a third-degree crime. He was detained at the Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Tuesday and released on a summons. His initial court hearing is provisionally scheduled for Tuesday, October 22.

The incident came to light on Friday, August 9, when a woman using the family restroom on JCPenney’s first floor discovered the device. The Special Victims Unit promptly took over the investigation, identifying Cardenas as a suspect. Analysis of the device revealed multiple electronic and digital files containing images from various unidentified restrooms. Assistance from the public is being sought to determine the locations of these restrooms as seen in the photos provided.
